Moving to a new home is a busy time and can feel stressful with so much to do. It’s easy to feel out of control when your home is packed in boxes and you still have a mountain of work ahead. But moving day doesn’t need to be as hectic as many people believe. By doing a few simple tasks, you can make your move go smoothly, significantly reducing stress for everyone. Here’s what you need to do.
A checklist saves sanity
Ahead of moving day, create a master checklist with everything you need to do. Also note anything you need to tell your movers so you don’t forget any details. Be as specific as you need. Lists are powerful tools. They help you get focused, stay on task, give you a sense of achievement and keep everyone organised. Most importantly, they stop you from forgetting any important details, which is where people without lists find themselves spiralling out of control.
Keep a master inventory on hand
We always stress the importance of labelling boxes when you pack so you know what they contain. But you can also make moving day much easier by keeping a master inventory. This is what professional movers do. Why? Because it makes unloading the truck more efficient. We know what boxes need to go in each room.
For unpacking, being able to lay your hands on the boxes you need first without having to sort through them is invaluable. You can organise your master inventory however you like as long as you reference each box. You can write bold labels, number each box, colour code them for easy identification with stickers, or a mix of all three. You can never do too much labelling. It’s always better than not doing enough.
Pack overnight bags for everyone
For every person in your family, pack an overnight bag with essentials so you have them immediately. These will vary for each individual, but typically you would include a few changes of clothes, toiletries, medication and phone chargers. We recommend packing another box with bedding, hand sanitiser, a first aid kit, snacks, drinks and anything else you may need immediately.
Talk to your movers ahead of moving day
Never hesitate to talk to your moving company to ask questions or finalise details. We’re here to make your move easier and are always happy to discuss any aspect of the move so it goes better for everyone. The more information you give us, the more efficiently we can get you moved. In particular, tell us about any unusual, large, heavy or awkward items, or if we need any disassemble and reassemble furniture.
Prepare for your arrival at your new home
If you don’t already have keys, make sure someone is available to give you keys and any security codes when you arrive. Also make sure you have organised your utilities including power, internet, gas and water.
Moving doesn’t need to be hectic or stressful. By keeping organised, using your checklist and having the essentials prepared, you’ll have a smooth move, even if you’re moving long distance, between states or to another country. If you need any more help or advice, feel free to give us a call.
