We all know that moving house is stressful. For some people, moving feels like being forced to deal with a crisis. While we do everything we can to make your move as stress free and easy as possible, you can also make your life easier on the other side by preparing a moving survival kit. Here’s what you need to do.
Make sure you keep your kit separate from other items
Every person will have slightly different needs in their moving survival kit. Choose suitcases or boxes that fit everything you need as well as being easy for you to handle. Do not get them mixed up with the rest of your belongings. The last thing you’ll want to do is go searching for your kit because it got mixed up with other boxes. If your movers are taking your kit, make sure the boxes are clearly marked and ask your movers to load them last, so they’re first off the truck.
Pack at least one full change of clothes per person
When packing clothes, consider your needs at the other end. You’ve probably planned to get your new house organised, so you’ll want practical clothes. Keep in mind you may also need to do some cleaning. Even though your new house should be clean, everyone has different standards when it comes to cleaning. Consider having an apron and gloves on hand rather than buried in a box.
Pack essential toiletries in a separate box
Being able to maintain your personal comfort makes moving go so much better. Pack all the products you’ll need to be clean and refreshed after a long day of organising a new house. Don’t forget to include a towel for each person, pack any medicines you may take on a regular basis and make sure you also include your first aid kit.
You need to eat and keep hydrated
You’d be surprised how many people forget this most basic of human needs on moving day. Not only do you need to eat and drink on moving day, you need to think a few days ahead. Few people feel like cooking a meal after a move, even if they manage to get their kitchen organised. Pack another box with cups, tea, coffee, bottled water, a kettle, plates and utensils or anything else you have for refreshments on a regular basis. Plan what you’re going to do for dinner and include your usual breakfast items too.
Make a bedroom box
Moving is exhausting. This is why experts tell you the first thing you should do when you arrive is to make your bed. With that done, you won’t need to worry about it later. Pack one set of sheets, bedding and pillows for each bed that needs to be made up.
Pack a ‘I’m gonna need that’ box
In your last box, pack all the items you’re going to need or regret not having if you can’t find them. Here’s a list for inspiration: your phone charger, a utility knife (for opening boxes), tools, a torch, something to keep everyone amused, rubbish bags, spare light bulbs, cleaning products and essentials for babies or very young children.
