Moving interstate can be quite a mission. As the sixth largest country in the world, if you want to start a new life in a different state, the logistics of getting there can be daunting. To make a successful move, you’ll need a solid plan with achievable tasks every step of the way. Here are seven tips to help you get to another state.
1. Make a plan
Making a moving checklist is essential for any move, but you’ll need a detailed plan to move interstate, as there are many more things to consider. Work out everything you need to do before you start, detailing when each task needs to be done and the order of importance. We have a detailed moving checklist if you need a place to start.
2. Downsize
The main cost of moving is based on volume and weight over distance. The further you have to move, the greater the cost. If you can lighten the load, you’ll reduce your moving costs. Last month we published an article about streamlining your load, with suggestions about how to downsize. Read the article if you need a few tips.
3. Get three quotes
We recommend you get three quotes from moving companies with good reputations. Ask for a detailed inspection of what you plan to move, and ask about any other services you might need like packing and storage. Compare quotes to see what services you’re getting for the fee, and go with the quote that suits you best.
4. Find out about insurance
Ask your mover if you can get moving insurance and what’s involved. When you’re moving your household belongings over a great distance, the cost of not having insurance far outweighs the cost of damage. Long distance moves often mean your belongings are in transit and storage for a much longer period of time. This adds extra hazards like moisture and pests creeping in.
5. Update documents, utilities and services
When we move across town, we normally only think about getting the utilities switched over, like water, power and internet services. When you move to another state, you may need to update documentation like driver licences. Different states have different rules, so it pays to check these and get them sorted before you move. You will also need to look at finding new medical care or schools, so research these and get a plan in action before you move.
6. Start packing early or get the pros
Timing is critical in any move, but much more so when you’re moving across states. If you’re packing yourself, give yourself plenty of time to get it done so your belongings are well-protected in transit.
Better still, ask your mover about packing services. We have the specialised packing materials to keep your belongings safe in transit, and it removes one very big headache from your to-do list, which means you can focus on other tasks.
7. Maintain a positive attitude
Moving interstate is a serious commitment, so do whatever you can to reduce stress during this time. Ask for help if you need it, find out what your movers can do to make the process easier, and maintain a positive attitude. Good movers will get your belongings to your destination and make the process as stress-free as possible.
